Knowledge Dissemination Efforts to Uplift the Marginalized in Early Twentieth Century Kerala

Harikrishnan Haridas

Abstract

The paper explores the ideas and methods of Theerthapada Paramahamsa in promoting education and disseminating knowledge among the marginalized section of the society including women of late nineteenth and early twentieth century Kerala. Swamikal advocated for knowledge as a universal right, emphasizing that access to education should not be restricted by caste, gender, or creed. He strongly opposed any form of discrimination, arguing that it contradicted both logic and religious scriptures. His approach involved working within society to educate people about scriptures, dispel superstitions, and teach language and other subjects. He established ashrams and spread his ideas through speeches, writings, and disciples, influencing both common people and monks. The paper highlights his efforts in educating women, including girls, and explores the contributions of his female disciples in empowering women through education. Additionally, it delves into Swamikal’s core arguments for universal education and his impact on society. The author asserts that through his logical reasoning, social initiatives, and dedicated disciples, Theerthapada championed the cause of free and open access to knowledge for all, breaking down societal barriers and discrimination.
