Avoiding Plagiarism in Research Writing and Language Technology

Editor Informatics Studies

Abstract

Plagiarism rise at an alarming rate since last two decades. Many reasons are assigned to this. First is the degradation in the quality of faculty in universities; and decisions makers at scientific research and development institutions. Then the undue interference of politics and government in universities and other scientific research systems. Along with this Internet has made pirating papers very easy since nineties. The failure of statutory bodies like UGC responsible to ensure standards has all contributed to decreasing quality of research writing and piracy. Added to all these factors is the failure to develop technologies for processing texts in Indian languages and scripts, which prevents text similarity checks. The paper discusses the situation which itself embeds the suggestions for change.
