Perceptions of University of Botswana Academic Staff on Web 2.0 Technology Adoption

A study amongst academic staff at the University of Botswana was carried out to find out the status of the adoption and use of Web 2.0 technologies using the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology as a methodological lens. Web 2.0 technologies are particularly important in this study because of the revolutionary utility they have in education, therefore a study on the adoption and use of these tools is relevant. The variables of the study were Performance Expectancy, Facilitating Conditions, Effort Expectancy, Social Influence and Behavioural Intention to adopt Web 2.0 technologies as suggested in the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT). The study targeted all academic staff and the response rate of 85 academic staff was realised, therefore the results were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics, particularly the stepwise regression tool in SPSS. The results show that the UTAUT theory was useful in predicting the behavioural intention to adopt and use Web 2.0 technologies, however, certain items in the Effort Expectancy, Social Influence and Facilitating Conditions constructs attracted a negative slope. This result shows possible adoption issues around Web 2.0 technologies amongst University of Botswana academic staff. The study recommends that institutions should monitor the introduction of all new technologies so as to put in place training modules for academic staff since technology is ever changing requiring that staff be kept abreast with it. Also students in the institutions of higher learning belong to the Millennial Generation and this requires that academic staff be conversant with new technologies.
