Bioinformatics tools associated with isolation and identification of marine endosymbiontic fungi

Krishna Priya R, Anil Kumar VG

Abstract

The marine environment is a highly biodiverse untapped source of novel metabolites with therapeutic and biotechnological potential.  Endosymbiotic fungi are fungi that live inside the body of other organisms for at least a portion of their life cycle and live asymptomatically within host tissues without causing any noticeable disease symptoms. Endosymbionts live in a highly stressful environment, especially in the marine, and produce unique metabolites with promising antiviral, antimicrobial, antioxidant, photoprotective, cytotoxic, genotoxic, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer activities. Thus, these microorganisms currently arouse the attention of the scientific community. This review summarizes the methodologies for the isolation of endosymbionts from marine organisms, various compounds isolated from them, some biotechnological processes, and bioinformatics tools which help in the discovery of bioactive compounds making the tedious process easier and faster.
