Big Data for Human Well Being and Survival: Opportunities and Challenges

Abstract

Big data is gaining a lot of publicity these days. The intervention of technology in human life is heading in an altogether different dimension. The paper throws light on to the various uses of Big Data in our daily life and how it makes human activities hassle free. Instead of the high optimism on the possibilities of Big Data's applications in all spheres of human activity, people are also concerned about its widespread adoption. Experts also opine that it could result in as many harms like threats to privacy, more chances for cyber crimes, sidelining developing countries, the lack of transparency of methods used to process the data, over-dependence on Big Data analytics against traditional methods, the widening of digital divides etc. The paper gives a birds eye view of select countries making use of Big data to solve problems haunting the society, how Big Data is helping humainty in the wake of Covid- 19, and aspects to be considered to prevent harms of technology.

Author Biography

  • Nayana Nair

    Nayana Nair, a recipient of UGC- Junior Research Fellowship in Library and Information Science, took her Master's degree in Library and Information science from Tata Institute of Social Sciences with gold medal. She completed her Bachelor's Degree in English (Hons) from the English and Foreign Languages University. At Capital Centre Library, Central University of Kerala, she was involved in the development of IRKnowledgebase, a portal and archive on International Relations. She also served as the Digital Library Coordinator for the Indian Public Library Movement Project at P.N. Panicker Foundation supported by NASSCOM and IPLM. Presently She is pursuing research on Big Data at School of International Relations, MG University, India.
