Future Prospect of Long Non-coding RNAs and Mitochondrial Respiration in Obesity - A Bioinformatics Perspective

Swathy B

Obesity is a complex multifactorial disease which is often considered to be a consequence of an imbalance between energy consumption and expenditure. Considering the critical role of mitochondria in maintaining cellular energy homeostasis, disruptions in mitochondrial function can be directly associated with obesity. The link between obesity and mitochondrial dysfunction are bidirectional, that is, on one hand, obesity can cause mitochondrial dysfunction and on the other hand, mitochondrial dysfunction can contribute to excessive fat accumulation leading to obesity. Given the potential association between mitochondrial health and obesity, understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying mitochondrial dysfunctions will give insights into the pathophysiology of metabolic disorders and development of novel therapeutic strategies. Emerging evidence indicates a putative role of long noncoding RNAs in regulating mitochondrial functions and metabolism. This article discusses the relationship between mitochondrial respiration and long noncoding RNAs and further outlines the implications of these interactions in obesity. Furthermore, bioinformatics approaches are employed to provide in silico evidences for the link between long noncoding RNAs and mitochondrial gene interaction in obesity. This perspective article might help in understanding the critical regulatory role of lncRNAs in mitochondrial function in the context of obesity.
