The paper presents the current state of informatics and its applications in fisheries sector of India. Opines that informatics led knowledge management is absent in the sector in spite of availability of sufficient ICT infrastructure. Factors involved in information cycle can comprehensively dealt by informatics and by evolving an efficient and effective information system. Presently, the stakeholders of the sector especially primary stakeholders are deprived of access to information they require. Fisheries sector of India needs informatics led services, system and delivery of information. To achieve this institutionalising the fisheries information sector is necessary. Author based on his studies reiterated the need for a Fisheries Information System of India (FISI), its network named Fisheries Information System Network (FISNet) and a central institute - Central Institute of Fisheries Informatics for extracting optimum utility of knowledge generated in the sector and for sustainable fisheries development.
