Documenting, Conserving, and Sustaining the Living Wealth of the Planet
Abstract
This article, adapted from the presentation 'Why is Biodiversity Important?' by David Attenborough, prepared for the Royal Society, examines the importance of biodiversity as the foundation of a healthy and sustainable planet. Biodiversity encompasses the vast variety of life forms and the ecological interactions that sustain essential ecosystem functions. The article highlights the role of biodiversity in food production, medicine, climate regulation, disaster mitigation, and human well-being. Particular emphasis is placed on the importance of documenting and understanding Earth's biological diversity, much of which remains undiscovered and is increasingly threatened by habitat loss, overexploitation, pollution, and climate change. The article also discusses biodiversity conservation, ecological restoration, community participation, and sustainable development as interconnected pathways for safeguarding the living wealth of the planet and ensuring a resilient future for humanity.
