Curating the Living Planet: David Attenborough and the Informatics of Biodiversity Knowledge

Prasad A, Joanna Thomas

Abstract

This is an appreciation of the life and contributions of Sir David Frederick Attenborough from the perspective of Knowledge Management and Information Science, interpreting him not merely as a natural historian and broadcaster but as a curator of planetary knowledge and a conservator of ecological memory. The study traces Attenborough’s intellectual formation, early fascination with collecting natural specimens, scientific education, and pioneering role in transforming broadcasting into a global medium for environmental knowledge dissemination. Particular attention is given to his documentaries, books, speeches, and audiovisual productions as repositories of biodiversity knowledge and as instruments for preserving ecological information across generations. The article analyses how his works function as documentary archives of endangered ecosystems, species behaviour, and environmental change, thereby contributing to global biodiversity awareness and public ecological literacy. It further explores his role in communicating climate change, plastic pollution, and conservation ethics to worldwide audiences. By connecting environmental communication with concepts such as knowledge preservation, archival memory, public information systems, and sustainability discourse, the paper argues that Attenborough’s lifelong work constitutes one of the most significant modern efforts in biodiversity knowledge management and ecological stewardship.
