Democratisation of Knowledge: A Modern Concern and Historical Issue
Abstract
The papers in Informatics Studies Volume 12 (1) explore the theme of Open Knowledge (OK), with focus on the contributions of Chattampi Swamikal, who can be regarded as an early advocate of OK. He challenged societal and caste-based restrictions that limited access to knowledge. The discussions delve into various aspects of knowledge dissemination in India, tracing the shift from traditional hierarchical structures to modern efforts at democratisation. They highlight the pivotal roles played by Swamikal and his disciples in expanding access to knowledge - whether in philosophy, medicine, or theology - among marginalized communities and also examine broader issues of knowledge control and autonomy, emphasizing their continued relevance today in fields such as medical sciences, religion, and philosophy. Collectively, they present a compelling narrative of the struggles and successes in making knowledge accessible to all, demonstrating that the pursuit of knowledge democratisation is not merely a contemporary concern but a historical movement, with figures like Chattampi Swamikal laying the foundation for more inclusive and open intellectual traditions.
