Chattampi Swamikal and the Democratisation of Knowledge
Abstract
Chattampi Swamikal (1853-1924) was a pivotal figure in Kerala's socio-cultural and intellectual realms. Through his life, teachings, and writings, he spearheaded the democratisation of knowledge, challenging the entrenched caste system and the priestly class's monopoly on education and sacred texts. His efforts laid the foundation for a more inclusive society, ensuring that knowledge was accessible to all, regardless of caste or social status. Swamikal's legacy underscores the transformative power of knowledge. By dismantling barriers and making knowledge universally accessible, he fostered a more egalitarian and enlightened community. His contributions remain a source of inspiration, underpinning ongoing social and intellectual advancement in Kerala. This paper examines the various methods Swamikal used to democratise knowledge and the lasting impact of his efforts.
